Global Symposium on Racing Speaker: Maury Wolff

Maury Wolff is a retired professional gambler, primarily betting on horses and casino games. He has consulted for racetracks and horsemen's associations, written articles on the business of racing and spoken at many industry meetings including several presentations at the Symposium. He has done studies which looked at the impact of takeout, exotic wagers, field size, and other variables which affected wagering on horse racing. Based on this research, he has that horse racing has been and continues to be overpriced and that the failures originating in its pricing and wagering structures have left it entirely dependent on cross-subsidization which undermine the sport's long term sustainability.
