Speaker Series: Curtis Linnell and Shuran Wright, Thoroughbred Racing Protective Bureau

Curtis Linnell and Shuran Wright from the Thoroughbred Racing Protective Bureau (TRPB) visited Race Track Industry Program students to discuss the importance of wagering integrity in horse racing. The presentation focused on the role of the TRPB in safeguarding the sport from fraudulent betting practices and ensuring fair play. Students were introduced to wagering patter analysis and ways that the TRPB is using artificial intelligence to better spot anomalies.
Curtis and Shuran also incorporated real-life case studies to highlight the significance of wagering integrity. In fact, Curtis assigned each student a different case to research as part of a term paper project. Students used the information learned in class, along with their research to better understand how bettors manipulated betting pools gain an advantage.
This presentation gave RTIP students a comprehensive understanding of how wagering integrity is monitored and upheld in horse racing. By studying past cases and understanding modern data analysis techniques, students gained good insight into how agencies and racetrack operators work together to protect the sport from betting fraud and system manipulation.
