Tucson, AZ – The University of Arizona Race Track Industry Program (RTIP) has named the late Charles E “Chuck” Simon as the recipient of the 2026 John K. Goodman Alumni Award, recognizing his contributions to Thoroughbred racing and, most importantly, the lasting impact he had on the people he mentored. An RTIP graduate, Simon was widely respected throughout the racing industry for his training prowess, equine and industry knowledge, generosity and willingness to help others. He took a genuine interest in young professionals, sharing his experience, offering guidance, and helping many find their path in racing.

The strongest testament to Simon’s influence comes from the success of those he mentored. In 2026, two of his former mentees, Cherie DeVaux and Chad Summers, captured the three legs of racing’s Triple Crown. Their accomplishments are part of the broader legacy Simon leaves behind through the many people he encouraged, taught and supported.

“Chuck Simon understood that one of the most important things you can do in racing is help the people coming behind you,” said Robert Hartman, Chair of the Race Track Industry Program. “His influence can be seen in the accomplishments of so many people he mentored. To see Cherie and Chad’s level of success this year is a remarkable testament to the impact Chuck had on the people around him.”

The John K. Goodman Alumni Award is presented annually to an RTIP alumnus who has distinguished himself or herself through professional achievement, service to the racing industry and a commitment to advancing the people and organizations that make the sport successful.

The award is named in honor of John K. Goodman, an early founder of the University of Arizona Race Track Industry Program. Goodman believed deeply in preparing the next generation of racing professionals and connecting students with the people and experiences that would shape their futures. “John Goodman understood the importance of giving people an opportunity to learn and grow,” Hartman said. “Chuck Simon carried that same spirit throughout his life in racing. It is especially meaningful to honor Chuck with an award that bears John's name.”

Simon will be recognized posthumously at the 2026 Global Symposium on Racing awards luncheon on Tuesday, December 8 at Loews Ventana Canyon Resort. His family, friends, colleagues and former mentees will be invited to participate in the recognition.
