Trevor McCarthy was born into racing with his father Michael McCarthy winning 2,907 races during his career as a jockey. Trevor knew from an early age that he wanted to follow his dad's footsteps and was riding racehorses in the shedrow at 9 years of age since he was too young to go to the track at the time. He then started riding for Graham Motion and the rest is history.

Getting his permit in late 2011, Trevor McCarthy has had quite a ride in his few years as a jockey. As an apprentice, he rode four horses to wins at Laurel Park on New Years Day in 2012.

Winning his first graded stakes race in 2014 and following that up with his second in the same year, McCarthy earned his first classic mount on Bodhisattva in 2015 in the Preakness Stakes. The ride was the perfect birthday present for the horseman, who turned 21 on the day he broke from the Preakness gate.

Through the 2010s, McCarthy emerged as a leading rider on the Maryland circuit, topping all jockeys in earnings during several meets at Laurel Park and Pimlico, including the entirety of Laurel’s 2019 racing season. He added riding titles at Pimlico and Laurel Park in 2020 and won four graded stakes races.

In December 2020, McCarthy married Katie Davis, a fellow jockey who also comes from a family of riders, including father Robbie and siblings, Jackie and Dylan.

McCarthy earned a major career milestone on May 14, 2022, when he won his first Grade 1 race. He guided Highland Chief to a 19.20-1 upset win in the Grade 1 Man O'War Stakes at Belmont Park, for Motion.
