Global Symposium on Racing Speaker: Dr. Laura Miller

Dr. Miller is a Professor of Mathematics and Joint Professor of Animal and Comparative Biomedical Sciences and Biomedical Engineering at the University of Arizona. Her research integrates mathematics, engineering, and physiology to understand how biological systems move and adapt under stress. Using computational modeling, experimental measurement, and data science, she studies the fluid dynamics of the heart and lungs and the biomechanics of locomotion across species—from tiny jellyfish to horses.

Dr. Miller leads the Systems Biomechanics of the Horse program at the Al-Marah Equine Research Center, where her group investigates how gait, breathing, and heart rate are coupled in performance and rehabilitation. Her recent work focuses on left–right gait asymmetries in off-the-track Thoroughbreds and how classical dressage-based retraining can restore balance and reduce physiological stress.

In addition to her university research, Dr. Miller founded EquiPhysics, a nonprofit dedicated to advancing equine and human biomechanics through science, education, and compassionate horsemanship. Her interdisciplinary projects have been supported by the National Science Foundation, the Burroughs Wellcome Fund, the Provost Investment Fund, and the Army Research Office.
