Historical Horse Racing

We traveled to Derby City Gaming to see the inside workings of a historical horse racing (HHR) facility. While there, we heard from Tim Bryant, the president and general manager, about HHR machines and how they support purses in Kentucky. Despite their appearance, HHR machines are not slot machines. In fact, they are devices that are pari-mutuel and based on previously run races; but they still contribute to the purse accounts. With higher purses offered at Churchill Downs and other racetracks in Kentucky, HHR supports the racing and breeding industry in the state.

Additionally, RTIP alum and KHRC director of pari-mutuel wagering and compliance, Steve May, visited the RTIP last year and spent a class discussing HHR and the purpose it serves in enhancing Kentucky racing. It was enlightening to see the product in action in a dedicated facility. — David Range
