Speaker Series: Alexa Ravit, HIWU–Director of Communications & Outreach
On December 4th, 2024, Alexa Ravit joined us as the final guest for the Joe Hirsch Speaker Series. Alexa, an RTIP alumna, currently serves as the Director of Communications & Outreach at the Horseracing Integrity and Welfare Unit (HIWU). Her journey and insights provided a compelling narrative on the evolution and impact of HIWU and its relationship with the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority (HISA).
HIWU, a division of Drug Free Sport International (DFSI), operates independently from HISA, although it owes its existence to the latter. HISA was established to create a national, uniform set of integrity and safety rules for thoroughbred racing, ensuring consistent application across all participants and racetrack facilities. As a private regulatory organization overseen by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), HISA plays a crucial role in maintaining the sport's integrity.
During her talk, Alexa highlighted the significant changes brought about by HISA and HIWU, particularly in addressing issues with trainers and ensuring that past practices are not considered in current evaluations. One of the key advancements she discussed was the collaboration between investigators across states, facilitated by HIWU, which has enhanced the effectiveness of regulatory measures.
A notable development in the field is the upcoming accreditation of the HISA Equine Analytical Laboratory (HEAL), set to take effect on January 1st, 2025. This accreditation marks a significant step forward in the scientific analysis and regulation of equine health and safety.
Alexa's passion for horse racing began in high school, driven by a desire to understand and prevent fatal injuries in horses. Her connection with Dr. Mary Scollay, who became her mentor, played a pivotal role in shaping her career path. Despite not coming from a racing background, Alexa's dedication and commitment to the sport have made her a key figure in the ongoing efforts to improve the welfare and integrity of horse racing.
Her talk not only shed light on the technical and regulatory aspects of HIWU and HISA but also inspired attendees with her personal journey and unwavering commitment to the sport. Alexa Ravit's contributions continue to drive positive change in the world of horse racing, ensuring a safer and more transparent environment for all involved.
