Tom Clark, owner of Rancho San Miguel, one of the leading thoroughbred breeding farms in California, spoke with students in the “Equine Form and Function” class. The wide-ranging conversation covered topics including what yearling buyers are looking for at the sales and how to prepare them for success. Tom focused on the importance of “horses being horses” and not to overact too early if there are minor imperfections. He warned the students not to interfere with mother nature as she has a pretty good design on these young athletes. He used a series of photos of RTIP’s 2024 Savvy Lady foal to reinforce his belief.

Tom also spoke about the challenges running a 250-acre farm in California given the recent news that Gold Gate Fields would cease operation in June. Tom emphasized that track purses and stability are the key to the strengthening a state’s breeding program given that people are making decision for horses that won’t run for three years.
