Global Symposium Panel Tackles Racing’s Data and Timing Challenges

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
TUCSON, AZ — Horse racing’s deep-rooted traditions bring with them unique complexities. Practices such as “run ups,” varying starting gate positions, and fluctuating race lengths make the sport far more difficult to measure and analyze compared to international standards.
At the center of this challenge is timing and tracking. While GPS has long been the industry’s primary tool, it is widely acknowledged as imprecise. Building wagering platforms, fan experiences, and integrity safeguards on this shaky foundation poses significant risks to the sport’s future.
“As competition for attention and trust intensifies—and with other sports setting ever-higher benchmarks for accuracy and transparency—racing cannot afford to fall behind,” said Robert Hartman, Chair of the University of Arizona Race Track Industry Program. “With billions of dollars in betting reliant on reliable data, strengthening timing systems is not just a technical upgrade—it is essential to protecting integrity, building confidence, and ensuring long-term growth.”
A panel of industry experts will explore practical solutions to improve racing data and bettor confidence:
- Randy Moss, On-Air Announcer, NBC Sports (Moderator)
- Scott Little, Vice President, Racing Services, Trackmaster
- Craig Milkowski, Timing Analyst
- Greg Pachman, General Manager, StrideSAFE
- Maurice Timmermans, Head of Equine Technology, MYLAPS Sports Technology
The panel From Run-Ups to Reliability: Fixing Timing Accuracy in U.S. Racing will be featured at the 51st Annual Global Symposium on Racing, taking place December 8–10, 2025, at the Loews Ventana Canyon Resort in Tucson, Arizona. The Symposium is hosted by the University of Arizona’s Race Track Industry Program (RTIP).
