Curtis Linnell and Shuran Wright on TRPB's Role in Shaping Modern Integrity Efforts
The Race Track Industry Program welcomed back Curtis Linnell and Shuran Wright from the Thoroughbred Racing Protective Bureau (TRPB) for a return visit, building on last year’s discussion of wagering integrity in horse racing. This year’s presentation expanded on the evolving role of the TRPB in protecting the sport, with a deeper dive into how data analysis and advancing technology are shaping modern integrity efforts.
Curtis and Shuran highlighted how the TRPB monitors wagering activity across jurisdictions, focusing on identifying irregular betting patterns and potential manipulation. Students were introduced to more advanced concepts in wagering analysis, including how artificial intelligence and real-time data tracking are being used to flag anomalies and strengthen oversight in an increasingly complex betting environment.
A key component of the visit continued to be the use of real-world case studies. Curtis once again challenged students by assigning individual cases, encouraging deeper research into how past betting schemes were executed and ultimately uncovered. By connecting classroom concepts to real investigations, students were able to better understand how subtle shifts in betting pools can signal larger integrity concerns.
The session provided RTIP students with a more advanced and practical understanding of wagering integrity compared to the previous year. By revisiting core principles while incorporating new tools and industry developments, students gained valuable insight into how organizations like the TRPB collaborate with racetracks and regulators to safeguard the sport and maintain public trust.
